Maker Mornings

While working at Amazon, I worked with another designer to develop a creativity-focused event series called Maker Mornings. Events took place monthly, led by different members of the design community, all focused on a freeform creative or craft activity. Events started with 15 people and grew to over 200 during my time with the activity.

Mixing analog and digital

For the brand materials, I painted different swatches of black paint onto paper and scanned them to create paint textures, which were then masked as different colors and used as overlapping layers. We combined bright, fun colors to match the event’s vibrance.

A hand-drawn logo

The Maker Mornings logo also incorporated hand-drawn elements, with marker drawings of a range of lettered options before selecting the final version. That version was then vectorized so it could be scaled and used across multiple placements, from posters and postcards to our website and presentations.

Other learnings

Maker Mornings was not only a lettering and visual project; I also learned a lot about event planning, managing volunteers and budgets, and public speaking. Our events were popular and required a high level of organization to execute. We worked on repeatable processes to help streamline each month. We also scaled to other support other events in the design community as well as locations outside of the Seattle headquarters.
